The snow (or ice) is falling. So much so there is nothing to do but watch. Besides the mad rush to the grocery store, there is no choice but to slow down. Maybe that is why we love it. A perfect reason to pause. Binge that Netflix series without guilt. Finish that book.
Ten years ago we were hit with a snow storm. Close to 20 inches of snow fell and for 3-4 days my 7-year-old and I were together night and day. All these years later, I can’t remember exactly what we did on those days. But I do remember the feeling. The slowness. We probably watched lots of Ninjago (that was a thing for a hot minute), drank hot chocolate, played with LEGOs, and let the outside world turn white.
But what I do remember before I began the long process of digging out, we went sledding and this was really the first time my son had even seen this much snow all at once.
The first time he went down the steep hillside, spinning and sliding in the snow is imprinted as one of my happiest memories as an adult. He laughed the entire time and immediately struggled to get back up the hill to go again and again.
The average human lifespan is estimated to be 4,000 weeks. The need to be productive drives us. We want to have purpose that fulfills our soul. We want to have meaning. However, has hustle culture is one we have became too acclimated to in life?
We work. We have side hustles to make ends meet. To have that little bit extra. We have passions and pursuits outside the need to pay the bills. For a limited few, those things align. For the rest of us it is a balancing act with free time.
I think for a lot of us, being at home when the weather is bad (providing the power is on), gives us an excuse to slow down. To stop and not worry about how we spend the next few hours doing not what we need – but what we want.
For me, Some chili is in the slow cooker. I’ve got about a quarter of a book to finish. Recording a new song. The “have-to-do” items can wait another day. Or another after that.
As the snow and ice continue falling here in 2026, sit back. Watch. Let the world slow down and know this moment of peace is coming for a reason at the right time.
